AFGHAN OPIUM CULTIVATION SOARS 59 PERCENT IN 2006
Opium cultivation in Afghanistan rose 59 percent in 2006, largely due to a dramatic increase in the troubled southern provinces. UNODC's Annual Opium Survey for Afghanistan showed the area under opium cultivation reached a record 165,000 hectares in 2006 compared with 104,000 in 2005. In the southern province of Helmand, where Taliban insurgents have scaled up their attacks on Afghan Government and international forces, cultivation soared 162 percent to 69,324 hectares. [

CARICC
Because a capacity for regional intelligence and analysis would assist law enforcement agencies greatly, UNODC has been supporting the establishment of the Central Asian Regional Information and Communication Centre (CARICC). Work on CARICC has progressed and all documents for its establishment have been finalized. During October, CARICC venues proposed by Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan were assessed and based on those recommendations, a venue is expected to be agreed to at the MoU meeting in early 2006.
LEGAL ASSISTANCE
UNODC has continued to develop its cooperation with international organizations taking an interest in relevant fields in Central Asia, such as the Anti-Corruption Network for Transition Economies (ACN), a regional forum established for exchange of experiences and elaboration of best anti-corruption practices for countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia countries. Along with national representatives, the forum gathers a number of international agencies.

MILESTONES #1
FROM THE REPRESENTATIVE
Central Asia has recently reemerged as a region of strategic interest. The rest of the world is increasingly paying attention to the region, and for good reason, Central Asia is facing a number of threats, from an emerging link between drug trafficking and terrorism to a general instability faced by all countries in transition but amplified by the region's geographical location.
Security and development are intimately linked in Central Asia and UNODC is widely recognized as a leading institution not only in strengthening interdiction capacities and reducing drug demand, but contributing to the overall sustainable and political development in the region.

Crossroads - Fighting Against Drugs and Organized Crime in Central Asia
Regional Visit of Kofi Annan Highlights the Need for Cooperative Efforts to Stop DrugsTrafficking
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan made hisory with his recent trip to Central Asia. He is the first Secretary-General to visit the countries of the region since their independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. This event represented more than the ongoing cooperation between the United Nations and the Central Asian countries; it underscores the growing geopolitical significance of the region in the context of international stability and security.
