UNODC Launches The National Campaign on Cybercrime Prevention "Do Not Trust Emojis"
San Salvador, 10 October, 2016. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the United Nations Fund for Children (Unicef) together with El Salvador General Prosecutor of the Republic (FGR) and El Salvador National Civil Police (PNC), and with financial support from the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), launched on 7 October, the National Campaign to Prevent Cybercrime "Do not trust Emojis".
The campaign´s presentation was attended by Commissioner Howard Cotto, PNC General Director, Ms. Monica Mendoza, UNODC Head of Country Office for El Salvador, Ms. Nadine Perrault, Unicef Representative in El Salvador, Ms. Noris Flores, FGR General Secretary and Mr. Davy Aguilera, INL Police and Border Security Advisor.
The objective of the campaign is to raise awareness among El Salvador population, especially children and adolescents, about the dangers that can be found on the Internet. Similarly, the campaign aims to inform the public about the most common crimes committed online, as well as to encourage parents to inform and guide their children in the proper use of information and communication technologies.
The campaign "Do Not Trust Emojis" comprises outdoor advertising, such as billboards, ground-level billboards, electronic billboards and images in bus rears. Additionally, the campaign has a high presence in social networks. Furthermore, in the context of the campaign the mobile app ControlApp has been launched, this app is already available to children, adolescents, parents and teachers. On this app, users can learn about the most common cybercrimes, additionally users have access to a directory of institutions where they can go to find help or report a crime.
The national public awareness campaign was developed thanks to financial resources provided by INL, under the project "Strengthening of the capacities of El Salvador National Police to effectively identify and investigate cybercrime cases", implemented by UNODC Global Programme on Cybercrime -GLOX76.
